Creator's Corner: Lucy Green of Homebody Club
Tell us a little about yourself! Who are you and what’s your creative background?
Hi everyone! I am Lucy Green. I grew up on the beaches of Adelaide, South Australia. I’m an only child and spent most of my time reading, imagining and learning to ride horses. For the past 7 years, I have lived in Melbourne, enjoying the amazing culture and food scene. I have just moved back to Adelaide and looking forward to a bit of a slower and more mindful life.
For those that love a little bit of profiling, I’m an INFJ and Aries Sun / Scorpio Moon / Taurus Rising.
When and why did you start your online community Homebody?
I started Homebody Club when I was transitioning from my corporate marketing career to freelance and felt really lonely. I was diving into some amazing resources on self-development and spirituality and was longing to have a community that I could share and learn from.
You’re coming up on Homebody Club’s second birthday! How has it evolved since you started?
Woah it’s crazy how quickly time flies! I originally started Homebody Club as a blog and weekly newsletter full of recommendations on what to read, browse and listen to. These resources still exist, but Homebody has grown into a beautiful membership called Homecoming which guides womxn to ‘come home’ to themselves - mentally, physically and spiritually.
What kind of topics does your membership cover?
Homecoming, our monthly membership is for those who love our current content but want to dive in deeper.
Homebody Club is all about exploring the intersection of self-development and spirituality. Homecoming dives into monthly themes like ‘Creativity’ or ‘Shadow (aka self-limiting beliefs and fears)’ with supporting expert masterclasses, video/audio modules and workbooks.
Some of our previous masterclasses include - ‘How to find alignment with human design’ and ‘’How to find your confidence as an introverted or sensitive person’. We also have monthly community calls on Zoom and a New Moon Women’s Circle.
What are your guiding values, and how are they reflected in the content you create for your blog, newsletter and membership?
My guiding values are honesty, connection and curiosity. I think these values are strongly reflected throughout everything I create in Homebody. I honestly have shared my experiences on the blog around things like my anxiety or comparison trap and continue to showcase other people’s stories.
Connection is the foundation of Homebody and is especially seen in the Homecoming membership. All of Homebody’s content is from the place of curiosity; it’s not about telling you what you should be doing or believing; it’s exploring new concepts and beliefs to broaden your perspective. It’s up to the individual to decide what resonates and what doesn’t.
We recently collaborated on a photoshoot for Homebody Club and you shared that you had anxiety about stepping in front of the camera and being seen. What inspired you to move beyond that fear and book the shoot?
I realised that the only thing stopping me from achieving my goals and my dreams was myself. By hiding behind my brand name, I was not fully stepping into my power as founder, creative or leader.
I never set out to be the face of anything or an ‘influencer’, but I think it is important that you lead by example and ‘walk the walk’. I’m still a work in progress, there are so many things I want to be more open, vocal and public about, but I think being seen via these photos is an important step.
What does stepping into your power look like for you, and do you have any advice for other women who also want to find that alignment?
I feel like I’m still in the messy middle when it comes to stepping into my power. Our shoot together has definitely helped and will continue to push myself to be seen publicly.
When I imagine myself fully stepping into my power, I imagine someone who is confident, bold, full embodied in their energy and feminine power, knowing what they want (and not being afraid to take a chance in getting it), joyous and curious. In terms of finding that alignment for yourself, the first step is to get down to the foundations.
What are your true values? What do you believe is most important to you? What is your vision for yourself and your life? I talk a lot about these key areas in our membership because I feel like it’s so important to create the life you want and not what somebody or society decides for you.
What has creating Homebody taught you about yourself?
Homebody has taught me that I’m more creative than I ever gave myself credit for. It has also taught me to look and take action on my shadows around comparison, confidence and perceived failure. Damn they are hard things to work through!
Talk to us about the transition from a corporate career to a freelancer to a business owner. It’s easy to look at someone’s Instagram feed and think they built everything overnight, but anyone paving their own path knows that it’s two steps forward and one step back....
It was not an easy process at all! First off, it’s a mind game. Before I even made the call to move, I had to work on my ego; especially around my job title and my identity when that role was removed.
I initially moved from 6 years of corporate full-time marketing to working 3-4 days a week at a startup. This enabled me to have some white space in my life, to rest and to start the ideation process of my next steps. That’s when I created Homebody Club.
After 1.5 years working at the startup, I started to build my own freelancing base and transitioned into my business juggling Homebody Club and clients. Again, this was not an easy step. SO much fear came up and scarcity beliefs started to bubble up to the surface.
It was not an overnight decision or something I took lightly. I had a savings back-up and discussed in-depth my plan with my partner before I made the jump. I’m still at this stage and now evaluating what I want my next couple of years to look like and how I want Homebody to grow.
What’s your favourite thing about the career and lifestyle you’ve created for yourself?
The freedom that I have in my life. I have the ability to work from anywhere and to a certain extent, any time. I’m out of the 9-5 office grind and it feels great!
What’s one of the hardest lessons you’ve learned through creating this community?
This Brene Brown quote says it best: “A lot of cheap seats in the arena are filled with people who never venture onto the floor. They just hurl mean-spirited criticisms and put-downs from a safe distance. The problem is, when we stop caring what people think and stop feeling hurt by cruelty, we lose our ability to connect. But when we’re defined by what people think, we lose the courage to be vulnerable. Therefore, we need to be selective about the feedback we let into our lives. For me, if you’re not in the arena also getting your ass kicked, I’m not interested in your feedback.”
I’ve learnt that I can’t please anyone, and that’s okay. There will be people that won’t understand or agree with me or the content and that’s okay. They’re just not my people.
Do you have creative habits or rituals that help you stay focused?
My habits and rituals aren’t specifically for my creativity, but help in keeping me overall feeling good (which then stems that creative flow!). I have been creating a beautiful night time routine, starting off with lighting some candles, doing my skincare routine, reading and journaling. I meditate every morning and pull a tarot card to aid some insightful introspection.
When you’re not working, what can we find you doing?
I will most likely be drinking coffee, deep-diving into the last theory or modality I’ve found via youtube video or book and snuggling my cats.
What’s your guilty pleasure after a long work week?
A sneaky glass of red wine on the couch with my partner and netflix!
What’s next for you and for Homebody Club?
Continuing to build and nurture our amazing community and Homecoming membership. I’ve also recently started a conscious business group on Facebook called, Sacred Disruptors. So I’m enjoying creating and planning content all around intentional business.
